The World’s Fastest Hard Drive

Fusion-IO has designed the world’s fastest hard drive - the IoDrive. Fusion states the drive is as quick as DRAM with the storage capacity of a hard drive. This allows for lightning fast data transfers. The chairman and CEO of Fusion-IO, Don Basile, explains further. “The IoDrive is a radical departure from traditional storage solutions and will change the way businesses think about their storage architecture. Specifically designed for the enterprise, the IoDrive offers a best-of-breed solution for drop-in-storage.”

iodrive-fusion

IoMemory, another Fusion-IO innovation, is the secret behind the IoDrive’s future success. IoMemory bridges the gap between memory and storage. It combines “today’s higher density NAND with high speed switching and network protocols.”

The IoDrive installs into any available PCIe x4 connector. This positions it a lot closer to the CPU than conventional drive. The IoDrive places hard drive data on the same level as a server’s memory. Since it is silicon based, the IoDrive fits in perfectly with both the CPU and DRAM. The IoDrive is almost a thousand times faster than any other hard drive on the market today. The IoDrive can read data at 700MB/sec and write data at 600MB/sec. It can also serve as storage cache or local storage.

The IoDrive can bring a huge boost to many industries. They include: graphic workstations, appliances, science and engineering, business and web servers and service. The IoDrive will improve performance across the computing world - from game design to physics modeling to financial modeling and analysis.

Since the IoDrive has no moving parts, it also lasts longer than conventional hard drives. An old fashioned hard drive has a life expectancy of five years. The IoDrive has an eight-year service life. When the IoDrive begins deteriorating only free storage space is lost. Systems operation and important data as not affected.

Fusion-IO IoDrive pricing begins at $2,400 for 80 GB. This is definitely one of those “next big things” for the computer industry. The IoDrive offers huge savings to the computer industry as well. One IoDrive can do the work of an enterprise SAN. It remains to be seen how well the IoDrive will do when it falls into the hands of eager consumers.

A Digital Pen Worthy of James Bond

Epos’ latest gadget

Epos’ latest gadget, the Digital Pen and USB Flash Drive, is easily the gadget of the month. The Digital Pen allows you to go to meetings, school, work and record your notes. It accepts standard mini ink refills. The USB Flash Drive records every page of your notes so that it can later be converted to text on your PC. The Digital Pen is able to do the same for charts or artwork. The USB Flash Drive can also function as a normal Flash Drive and store music, video and other file formats as well. Like the OCR software included with scanners, the Digital Pen’s software is not yet 100% accurate but it is accurate enough to save you hours of re-typing information.

The Digital Pen weighs 16 grams and it is only slightly larger than a regular fountain pen. One downside with the Epos Pen, is that it does not come with rechargeable batteries. It uses two watch batteries which provide more than 40 hours of use. Sensors in the pen activate it only when you are actually writing with it. The Digital Pen begins transmitting ultrasonically. The USB Flash Drive connects to the edge of your paper like the clip of a clipboard. Epos is to be applauded for the efficiency of their product design. The USB Flash Drive can easily be connected to just about any form of paper. LED lights on the drive assure you that it is receiving your transmissions. Each time you turn your page, sensors within the USB Drive records that the new data needs to go on a new page. The Digital Pen includes software that deletes blank pages when it’s connected to a PC.

Epos’ Digital Pen and USB Flash Drive costs $129. This is equivalent to many of the Wacom tablets and the Digital Pen is far superior. You can do almost anything that you could do on a Digital Tablet with the Digital Pen. Furthermore with the Digital Pen you do your sketching on a true artist table instead of on an office desk. EPOS includes the software for running the Digital Pen on the USB Drive. This makes it easy to use the Digital Pen on any Windows 2000, XP or Vista computer.

The Backpacker’s Diary

Although it is a great recreational activity, backpacking in the wilderness can be very dangerous especially when adventurers go off solo or in small groups. A multitude of dangers await the unwary. One of the greatest dangers is getting lost or injured while by yourself. It is very hard to call for help since a lot of cell phones are not able to get a signal in remote wilderness areas. A new concept, the Backpacker’s Diary is the tool for you.

The-Backpacker’s-Diary

The Backpacker’s Diary is literally in the form of a 10×12x2 inch traveling diary that fits easily in your back. This diary is packed with helpful gadgets. Each diary page has a different function based on different technologies. The Backpacker’s Diary includes such pages as a media recorder, and other page is a keyboard, a LCD display and a page for EL illumination.

EL illumination is one of the Backpacker’s Diary truly ground-breaking features. El illumination is also called Electroluminescence. It is an electrical and optical phenomenon where a material emits light in response to either an electric current passed through it or a strong electric field. Normally used to light applications or information displays, the Backpacker’s Diary allows for it to be used to illuminate a small area while you are sleeping.

The Backpacker’s Diary uses a flexible solar panel to charge the device while you are hiking during the day. The Backpacker’s Diary is constructed out of high-intensity plastic and other flexible materials to increase its durability in outside conditions.

Among the features included with the Backpacker’s Diary is a Digital Bookmark. This allows you to record picture, videos, and sounds of nature or observational notes. The Digital Bookmark is worn in your chest pocket and transfer information to your Backpacker’s Diary.

The Backpacker’s Diary allows users to communicate with each other. You can share all the information you’ve gathered wirelessly. This includes the route, weather, location coordinates provided by the built-in GPS system and information gathered by your Digital Bookmark. This communication function is the best feature of the Backpacker’s Diary. If a hiker equipped with this device is injured, he could possibly transmit his location to Backpacker’s Diary equipped rescuers. To make this easier, it would be nice if the Diary would allow you to program a panic code into your Digital Bookmark. Say this code and your location will be broadcasted to all hikers in signal range.

The “Temple Switch” - Wink Technology in Development

temple-switch

Japanese researchers have developed a technology that can detect the temple movements that accompany winking or blinking. The system is composed of a computer chip and a pair of infrared sensors. Called the “Temple Switch,” the system is small enough that it can be built into the side of a pair of glasses.

The “Temple Switch” could be used to control iPod functions. Closing both eyes for a second will stop the iPod. A blink will start it back up again. A wink in the right eye will fast forward to the next track and a wink of the left eye take it back.

The “Temple Switch” is smart enough to know the difference between ‘natural blinking’ and the deliberate 1-second blinks required to operate a device like an iPod. Kazuhiro Taniguchi, a researcher at the Graduate School of Engineering in Osaka University explains, “Normally you blink an energy-saving manner, very quickly and lightly, but you would close your eyes more firmly to operate the device.”

The developers of the “Temple Switch” hope to see wide spread use of the device when it is released. Besides being used in iPods, the “Temple Switch” could be adapted to operate television sets, room lighting and other household devices. The “Temple Switch” would also be in much demand for professionals who regularly have their hands filled - rock climbers, motorbike drivers and astronauts. The device could also be adapted to aid the disabled.

Mr. Taniguchi states, “There are some people who are incapable of winking on one eye. For those, we can program the system to give a command when they blink twice in a fast sequence.” The different way that the “Temple Switch” can be adapted is one of its strongest features.

Developers at Osaka University plan to begin marketing of the device in two to three years. The “Temple Switch” has all the markings of a breakthrough device. It can benefit a wide range of people ranging from the disabled to astronauts. The “Temple Switch” would also allow people to operate supported devices “hands free.” The “Temple Switch” will be a must have gadget in the near future.

J.Lo and USB - A Winning Combination?

Gresso, a small company from the former Soviet Union, partners with Jennifer Lopez to create a line of “luxury” USB drives. The line is titled - “Adam & Eve.” Gresso’s “Adam&Eve” drives have a maximum storage capacity of 1GB - tiny by today’s standards.

J.Lo and USB

Gresso has designed their drives to be wearable - each drive is stylishly designed as an object that will adorn your clothing. Buyers can choose from an apple, a cross and a classic rectangle. The “Adam&Eve” drives are made out of mahogany and African Blackwood and are decorated with 14-carat gold and white Swarovski crystals. Remember this is a USB drive that we are talking about and not a piece of fashion jewelry. Most technologically skilled and gifted people are not runway models. Gresso’s “Adam&Eve” drives seem to be targeting an unknown section of the computer market.

Gresso can be given credit for their commitment to the new “Adam&Eve” USB product line. They have even arranged to create a “special edition” of the “Adam&Eve” USB Drive. BMG Music Entertainment has authorized Gresso to include Jennifer Lopez’s latest album “Brave” to come packaged with the special edition “Adam&Eve” drives. The Special Edition USB Drives will come with J.Lo’s signature and the album name etched on the drive.

Move Over Jordan, Now there’s MacAir

Gresso can cut their highly-probable losses from the “Adam&Eve” drive. They can change their target market. If Gresso packages the “Adam&Eve” drive as a J.Lo exclusive jewelry line, they would sell like hot cakes. - to J.Lo music lovers and some odd jewelry collectors. Don’t even mention the USB drive capacity as a feature - focus on the included album “Brave.” Ask BMG to use its marketing muscle to get the “Adam&Eve” jewelry in all music markets. This is how to make lemonade out of a true “lemon” of a product.

For the serious and not-so serious computer users, J.Lo and Gresso make a perfect combination - a losing one. A Custom USB drive is an innovative idea. Customizing them as “fashion jewelry” is not a good application for the idea. The “Adam&Eve” Flash Drive under delivers in features and drowns in an ocean of hype. It will only succeed if BMG Music delivers the “Adam&Eve” line, with all of its considerable marketing muscle, into the arms of music lovers.

Sqwack DF7220, Now That’s a Photo Frame!

You can purchase Parrot’s latest offering - the Seven Inch DF7220 Wireless Photo Frame - for only $144.95. This wireless photo frame comes with SD card reader, Bluetooth and USB interfaces. The DF7220 continues the push to bring tech gadgets into PC-less homes. Although you can drag and drop via a USB connection with a PC, the DF7220 easily accepts memory cards directly from digital cameras. Bluetooth devices are the easiest. Your pictures are wirelessly transferred into the DF7220 Photo Frame. Unlike its similarly priced competitors, the DF7220 provides users with multiple input methods. This great for people who only have a cell phone or digital camera - you can download your photos into the DF7220.

Parrot’s DF7220 Wireless Photo Frame

Parrot’s DF7220 Wireless Photo Frame can hold as many as 300 digital photos. The DF7220 can display even more photos when a memory card is attached. It can display up to 32,768 colors on a Color LCD screen with 410 x 234 pixels. Unlike its competitors, Parrot’s DF7220 handles both JPG and GIF photo formats. You have full control over a photo’s brightness.

Ease of use is the Parrot’s DF7220 greatest strength. Simply plug the frame into an available wall outlet and you are ready to add photos. Your downloaded photos are automatically adjusted to fit the 7-inch frame. The DF7220’s back panel allows you to arrange your photos, create a slide show, and even delete unwanted photos. You can rotate the frame to adjust for vertical or horizontal pictures.

Sometimes the “small features” define a great gadget. Parrot shows their concern for energy conservation with the DF7220. You can program the photo frame to show photos at a predetermined time or allow the DF7220’s sensors to shut it off when it gets dark. Auto-shut off does that for the DF7220. The cost of needless running photo frames and other gadgets at night adds up over time. The DF7220 saves you both money and energy with this feature. Competition is fierce among Digital Photo Frame companies. Parrot separates itself from the pack with a quality product - the DF7220 Wireless Photo Frame - that provides more features for your money.
