Laptop To Desktop - Transformers!

Laptop To Desktop - Transformers!
Not long ago people were inspired by laptops! The only problem with laptops was that they climbed down if compared to desktops. Today everything is different – laptops have caught up with desktops, when it is about specs, and exceeded them in terms of comfort and portability.

The comfort and the need to use a PC (mainly Internet) wherever you need it comes as a major priority and PC portability is a most wanted feature. On the other hand, there are people such as Yong-Seong Kim – the designer who considers that we have come to a point when we need it vice-versa: to transform a laptop in a desktop. (Watch out it’s from the “Transformers”!) The designer actually offers a really ingenious docking solution. Yong-Seong Kim’s solution is just a response to the existing demands on the gadgets market!

The very idea consists of a huge slot behind the LCD display, that allows you to slide your laptop in without too much effort. This makes it possible for you to use all data you have on your laptop accessing it as you’d do from a regular desktop. The very display of the laptop can also be used as a secondary screen, this time vertically.

I must be honest the concept sounds and looks pretty good, but it is rather more eye candy than practical.

The question I ask myself is – how am I going to use it? The answer is ‘just the same as I’d have done with my regular laptop’. So, why do I need it then?

Throwing away my cynic moods, I can admit the fact that this creation is meant for those who want it work FANCY, but it is less attractive to those who want it JUST work!

By the way, some tend to somehow compare the concept of the “laptop-transformers” with the Palm Folio. Well, for me it’s not really like that. See for yourself whether it suits you or not!

First KORG DS-10 album released (Korg music on the Nintendo DS!)
The world’s first album entirely composed on KORG’s Nintendo DS synthesizer (an emulator of the classic MS-10) has been released courtesy of MP3death.us. It’s actually not bad make-out music if you’ve got a chiptune aphrodisial pleasure model handy. Moma solar-powered laptop bag

Good thing the sun won’t explode into a supernova anytime soon, as there won’t be a market for this Moma solar-powered laptop bag if it did. This nifty bag not only juices up your laptop whenever you tote it around in the bag thanks to the generous amount of solar panels located on the outside, but it also works with cell phones as well as a range of other electronic devices thanks to various tips and adapters supplied. The solar bag is able to hold up laptops of up to 17″ in size and is constructed from water resistant materials for added protection. You will have to fork out the equivalent of a beefy netbook though, as the Moma solar-powered laptop bag retails for $598.

Stop worrying about mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs
You’re being silly. Here’s Dan Rutter: The second you read someone saying that metallic mercury is an incredibly potent neurotoxin, you know you’re looking at bullshit. ORGANIC mercury compounds are indeed ultra-poisonous, but metallic mercury quite simply is not. It ain’t good for you; there ain’t no Vitamin C in there. But breathing a bit of metallic mercury vapour really is not a big deal. And the amount of metallic mercury in a domestic [fluorescent lightbulb] is tiny - only a few milligrams. It’s the same old story: misrepresented studies, a cottage industry of panic nannies and a mainstream press always willing to make a meal of it. Photo: Stitch Light-Bulbs Of DOOOOOOMMMM! Ghostbusters now available in USB form

Ghostbusters now available in USB form

The 1984 comedy Ghostbusters is one of the funniest movies ever made, and it will now be remembered as the first film ever to be released in USB flash drive format. PNY and Sony Pictures Entertainment recently announced plans to pre-load the film on specially marked 2GB USB drives.

The film is put on flash drive in a DRM format, so a user cannot copy it. However, you can download it to your PC in case you need your ectoplasmic fix for the day. Unfortunately, if you try and play the movie without the flash drive inserted, you will get slimed, as it will not work.

This is the first time a movie has been used to sell a flash drive, but it probably won’t be the last. Perhaps all movies will be on flash drives someday, but these flash drives should probably be some sort of special packaging. This Ghostbusters flash drive, by itself, has no branding of any kind, but it does have 12 hours of video play, 33 hours of music and 1080 picture capacity.

So, “who ya gonna call” if you want the Ghostbusters 2GB flash drive? The Argos website! It is at a high price of $53, but as Bill Murray said in the film, “no job is too big, no fee is too big”.

The Napbook laptop case doubles as a pillow

The Napbook laptop case doubles as a pillow

I don’t usually write up cases, purely because although they’re cool gadgets are always cooler.  They just happen to be the thing that keeps your gadgets warm and safe.  Typically the most exciting thing to happen to a laptop case is to have color added to it or space invaders slapped on.  However, this Napbook actually does have an interesting twist to it.  The top flap on the laptop case is well padded, giving you a nice fluffy spot to lay your head for a quick nap.  If you like to camp out for launch dates of games or gadgets and want your laptop along for entertainment, you could easily use this as a pillow.

It would also mean your laptop is safely stowed away under your head and less likely to turn up missing.  This is a design by Hafsteinn Juliusson, a designer from Iceland.  Since it is a design, there really isn’t any word on how to get one.  However, for those with crafty skills, it seems to be a simple enough DIY project.  Plus that way you can pick the colors or the amount of padding you’d like added.  Although the look of this design does border on goofy, the practical uses for it make it a bit more appealing.

The Skeleton Disco Ball perfect for spooky parties

The Skeleton Disco Ball perfect for spooky parties

Disco balls have got to be the ultimate shiny object and this one even has glowing red eyes.  It also even comes in the shape of a spooky skull.  It’d be great to pick up for either this year’s Halloween party or just anytime you’re in the mood for a goth themed dance.  After all the goth kids can’t have just any normal disco ball, it has to be slightly different so as to not get confused as one of the other average joe dances.  The mosaic glass may look the same as it does with every other disco ball, but thanks to glowing eyes and an odd shape it sets itself apart from the rest.

The skull itself is 8 inches, so it’s not very big.  It’s more meant for smaller dances within your home than those the size of prom.  It requires an odd mixture of batteries to keep it spinning all night.  It uses one D battery and three AA.  That’s and, not or, and of course they’re not included.  However, it does include a motor that spins the ball on the string for you.  It will cost you $39.99 from the Fright Catalog.

Drivable X-34 Landspeeder replica by Star Wars modder Daniel Deutsch

Drivable X-34 Landspeeder replica by Star Wars modder Daniel Deutsch
Vehicle modder Daniel Deutsch (creator of the wonderful R2D2 projector) had built his own Landspeeder with a custom aluminum chassis. It travels a maximum of 25 MPH and can putter around in a Segway-like sphere of influence: a few miles on a single charge. Perfect for running down womp rats, but the X-34 Landspeeder is the perfect open top for the predictably dry Tatooine summers. Without a roll-up canvas top, Daniel’s sweet ride will be filled with stagnant water and slimy leaves within the autumn: a portable, hovering Frop Bog. Landspeeder [Daniel Deutsch via Neatorama]…

Arkon offers car mount bundles for Mio Moov and Navman S-Series GPS units

Arkon will be making available premium upgrade aftermarket car mount bundles for both the Mio Moov and Navman S-Series GPS, and each of these mount bundles comprise of a custom cradle adapter as well as a location specific pedestal that is meant for use in the vehicle itself only.

Users can choose from a variety of different mounts that attach to the windshield, dash, cup holder opening, lighter socket, sun visor, and air vent locations. Arkon offers the most extensive lineup of car mounting solutions for use with Mio, Garmin, Magellan, TomTom, and other leading GPS makers.

If you’ve grown extremely attached to your GPS navigation system and can’t live (drive) without one, then I would suggest investing a small sum of money (anywhere from $17.95 to $29.95) on one of these puppies.

NASA admits computer viruses have made it into space

NASA admits computer viruses have made it into space
NASA has admitted that a computer virus was taken to the ISS in July. And it’s not the first time! The laptops infected with the virus were used to run nutritional programs and let the astronauts periodically send e-mail back to Earth. The laptops carried by astronauts reportedly do not have any anti-virus software on them to prevent infection. Once it has scooped up passwords and login names the Gammima.AG worm virus tries to send them back to a central server. It targets a total of 10 games most of which are popular in the Far East such as Maple Story, HuangYi Online and Talesweaver. Nasa is working with partners on the ISS to find out how the virus got on to the laptop in the first place. That’s certainly rather benign, but perhaps it’s time to start thinking of Norton, NASA. Although come to think of it, Norton could bring down the Space Station by itself. Computer viruses make it to orbit…

Dual Touchscreen Nintendo DS in 2009?

Dual Touchscreen Nintendo DS in 2009?
My former Kotaku colleague Brian ‘LOL’ Ashcraft has plied mysterious “sources” in Japan with sake, reducing them to salaryman-style drunkenness. Plucked from their chaotic drunken ramblings? Some details about the next iteration of the Nintendo DS. According to Ashcraft, several industry sources outside of Nintendo claim that a new DS is being prepared… one with a top-mounted touch screen. The screens will also be slightly bigger. It’s plausible. The DS is still early in its lifestyle: exciting games are still coming out for the platform. A top-mounted touch screen would allow for new types of games to be developed while maintaining library backwards compatibility without a built-in emulator. I think the part of me that is struggling with this rumor is I simply don’t know what a top touch screen would add: the bottom touch screen is used meaningfully seldom enough as it is. On the other hand, Nintendo has a way of making seemingly useless gimmicks into system-defining backbones that make me feel foolish for my skepticism. Either way, we’ve got a lot of time to speculate: Nintendo won’t even announce these babies until 2009. Providing they aren’t just unicorns. Rumor: New Dual-Touchscreen Nintendo DS in early 2009 [Gizmodo]…
