The World of Drawing Belongs to Wacom!

Change the way you do your digital art and photo retouching with this 12” miracle tablet.

Wacom-Cintiq-12WX

Wacom has truly changed the world of photo editing for the better. The basically “plug and play” functionality allows users to get started as soon as they sit down. The extra long cord on the pen gives true freedom of movement, and the tilt sensitivity blows a mouse control out of the water!

The display is pressure sensitive, as previously stated, which is not so unique in the gadget world. Yet the 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and the eraser tip ARE unique.

The natural reaction to the user’s movement is almost exactly the same as drawing on paper with a pencil. There is not a delay in the view of the picture as it is drawn on the screen.

Along with the standard “shift,” “control,” and “command,” buttons, there are track pads that can zoom in and out, and the keys can be changed to function as whatever needed for your particular project.

The one small glitch could possibly occur is with a Mac OS, and is rare, on the video system. The one slight negative to the product is the time it will take to get used to the buttons and controls. Yet once those are mastered it will be as simple as drawing on a notepad.

Pricing is set at $999, which for just amateur use may be a bit too much. However, if it is to be used as an income producer, the price is a clear investment that will give you time back and increase your potential earning capacity. Then add on the two year warranty and it will pay for itself in just a few hours of a project.

This board will replace all need for a keyboard when doing photo and drawing work, and speed production exponentially. It is truly worth the price tag, and you don’t even need to change operating systems – it works on Windows or Mac with ease.

Track Those 40 Winks

So many people have trouble sleeping world wide that it is a wonder that the market is not filled with a number of sleep monitoring or inducing gadgets. Innovative Sleep Solutions latest gadget - the Sleeptracker Pro - helps you gather data on your sleeping pattern. The Sleeptracker looks like an oversized wrist watch. It tracks the number of times that you are in a near-awake moment during the night. Near-awake sleep usually happens in-between the deep and refreshing REM sleep. Loud noises and outside stimuli can also cause a near-awake moment. During this time you can sit up and look at the clock or briefly toss and turn before falling back to a deeper sleep. Most people average 1 near-awake moment every 20 to 35 minutes during a normal night. These moments usually last only 20 seconds.

Sleeptracker

Dr. Lydia Wytrzes is the Medical Director at Sacramento’s Sutter Sleep Disorder Program. She analyzes Innovative Sleep Solutions Sleeptracker. “My sense is it’s a bit of a gimmick. If you’re a bad sleeper, I’m not sure how this thing would help you. It’s basically a motion sensor.”

Innovative Sleep Solutions is very careful to state what the Sleeptracker is not. It will not help you to sleep better or shorten the amount of sleep that you need per night. It is not a medical device. The Sleeptracker will track your near-awake moments and can be set to alarm when your body is most awake. The data it gathers about your near-awake can be uploaded into your PC via a USB port. If would be great if Innovative Sleep Solutions included detailed questions to help you create a personal sleep profile. They could have asked questions like when did you eat dinner, what did you do immediately before going to sleep and so on. Having this information alongside the near-awake data would be a whole lot more useful.

The Sleeptracker Pro costs $179. This is an expensive alarm clock. The data gained from a consumer’s sleep pattern is interesting but it still requires you to diagnosis why one night’s sleep is better than another. The Sleeptracker Pro is a nice toy but it delivers little for almost 200 bucks.

Making the Grade

The United States Marine Corps is famous for many things - bravery, courage, toughness, faithfulness - the list goes on. One trait that’s not on the list is Marines receiving the latest high tech gadgets - until now. The V22-Osprey is a tilt rotation aircraft. It’s able to take off and land like a helicopter but rotates its propellers to gain greater air speeds than any helicopter. The current war gave both the Marines and the Air Force opportunity to field test this vehicle. The Osprey proved excellent in troop insertions and medical extractions. It also showcased its versatility in out flying its predecessors - the CH-46E and the CH-53D. The Osprey moved at twice the speed and at a higher altitude - more than 10,000 feet. Both of these factors allowed the Osprey to easily evade enemy fire.

V-22

The V22 performed well in Iraq. The only consistent problem was with that the VTOL’s (Vertical Take Off and Landing) engines wore out faster than expected. It is unclear if this is due to Iraq’s sandy nature or an inherent problem in the Osprey’s engine design. The Osprey is able to transport 24 Marines 700 kilometers at a speed of 400 kph. The CH-46E could only transport 12 Marines 350 kilometers at a speed of 200 kph. The Osprey can carry weights up to 5 tons 135 kilometers. Once again, this is a huge improvement over the CH-46E only being able to carry 1 ½ tons 90 kilometers. Even with the engine wear problems, the V22 provides the Marines with a much better aircraft. Rolls-Royce, the engine company, is investigating the engine phenomena.

There are three prime contractors - Boeing Defense and Space Group, Bell Helicopter Textron and Allison Engine Company - are behind the development and construction of the V-22 Osprey. The Department of Defense has authorized the purchase of 26 Osprey for the Air Force and 141 V-22 aircraft for the US Marine Corps. Purchases will be evenly spaced out over the next several years until 2013. High-tech planes like the Osprey will greatly aid the Marine Corps execute its primary mission in the upcoming months.

Hi-tech Finger Art

Art is one of the few mediums that have been slow in adapting new technology. There is a marked line between digital artists and conventional artists. Kind of like the PC and Mac divide in the computer world. Wacom latest gadget - the Cintiq 21UK- seeks to unite the art world. The 21UK is an “interactive pen display.” You can actually draw on your monitor screen with the digital pen. Most artists started out sketching with pen and paper. The advent of the computer required them to learn new techniques for art production. Earlier Wacom tablets allowed to regain many of the regular hand motions without providing instant visual feedback - you had to look away from the tablet and at the monitor to see what you were drawing. The 21UK changes that.

Cintiq 21UK

The Cintiq 21UK monitor is a 21.3″ TFT display. It weighs 22.4 pounds with the stand. You can rotate it 180 degrees and bend it within 10 and 60 degrees. You can even completely remove the display to work with it in your lap. How natural is that! Wacom even textured the display to make it feel like paper. Digital Artists can return to their freehand roots with Wacom latest gadget. Simultaneously a conventional artist’s transition to the digital art world is much easier thanks to the Cintiq 21UK. Programmable ExpressKeys and Touch Strips allows you to configure the Cintiq to fit your artistic needs.

The pen portion of the Cintiq 21UK is equally impressive. It recognizes 1,024 different pressure levels. This allows you to easily perform crosshatching and graduated shading techniques. It also includes different nibs for different artistic effects. For example, there is a Stroke nib to provide brush like painting strokes. The other end of the pen functions as an eraser allowing you to easily make corrections to your artwork. The pen’s cushioned and contoured grip helps to prevent hand and wrist repetitive-motion stress during long work assignments.

Wacom’s Cintiq 21UK costs $2499. This is a small price to pay for such an amazing gadget. This device will revolutionize how you use your computer. This item is sure to be displayed in larger computer retailers. Try it out. You are sure to add it either your birthday or Christmas gift list.

Finally a Gadget That Puts Movies in Their Proper Place

The modern PC is one of the most versatile devices ever created. You can configure your system to handle desktop publishing, multimedia or video game design, word processing or the ultimate game machine. One of the few areas where PCs fail to measure up is video playback. Most consumers have TV screens that are significantly larger than their PC monitors. Myka latest gadget which is also named Myka is an open standard BitTorrent device that allows you to easily move your legitimate movie downloads to your TV set. Other “video boxes” - like Blockbuster or Netflix/LG - use proprietary technology. If the consumer buys movies from both Netflix and Blockbuster, they will need to have both of their boxes. This is a waste of both space and money.

Myka

The Myka uses the Linux operating system. Its internal hard drive comes in an assortment of sizes. (500, 160 or 80 GB) The Myka plays the following formats: WMV, DivX, MPEG2 and h.264. The device requires either a WiFi or LAN internet connection. Myka has teamed up with isoHunt to ensure that only legitimate media will be downloadable into the device. This move encourages other media content providers to team with Myka since the company has made it clear that it has a zero tolerance for media piracy.

Myka president, Dan Lovy, explains further. “Bit Torrent is actually installing their certified system onto Myka. Any torrent can be pointed to by the box and downloaded. We will be adding a send to Myka button on many of the larger torrent sites. Check out the news piece on isoHunt. We are currently running an ad campaign with them. We are starting with the BitTorrent community. We will actually licensing our system to any hardware vendor as a white label service. We think this is the future. The torrent community is our beach-head.”

Pricing information is not currently available for the Myka. Their alliance with BitTorrent, one of the web’s leading media content providers, positions the company for success. As more and more consumers switch to High Speed Internet solutions, media content becomes more and more important. The Myka allows you to easily view your purchased movies and television shows comfortably whether at home or on the road.

A Classic Revisited

It is rare for a video game to reach classic status. Yes, you have some long running game franchises but a classic game will cause players to stop playing Halo 3 or Guitar Hero and spend hours playing down memory lane. Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers is a classic game. First released in 1985, Super Mario Bros was the first side scrolling game. Nintendo revisits this classic for the Gameboy DS. The new game is appropriately called, “New Super Mario Bros.” Today’s portable game systems have much more power than the original Nintendo game system. Unlike most new games on the market today, New Super Mario Bros did not set out to break new graphic records. The game is well within the DS system specs. Nintendo designers perfectly captured the feel of game play on the original Super Mario Bros or Mario World with this new game. Nintendo particularly focused on exciting game play. 3D versions of both the classic plumber and his foes are the major changes in the game. You will also find new powers, foes and worlds in Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo’s New Super Mario

This time, Mario needs to save the Princess Peach from Bowser Jr. Playing New Super Mario Bros is like walking down memory lane. Like the original game, you will hold onto a flagpole to advance to the next level. This new game is also a side scroller. Green mushrooms still grant you an extra life. What is excitingly frustrating about this game is that so much new content is mixed with the old. Mario can change sizes from Giant Mario who fills up the DS play screen down to Mini Mario who is no bigger than a mouse and able to fit through small crevasses. Both sizes play a critical role in game play. Nintendo also included a number mini-games. Although the games are simplistic, they do a good job of entertaining younger players and introducing them to the world of the Mario brothers.

Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros costs $34.99. Anyone who remembers the original Super Mario Bros must get this game. You get to relive the past while thrilling to all of the new game options in the New Super Mario Bros. This is also one of the few games that is designed for a wide range of ages. Likewise, New Super Mario Bros allows you to compete wirelessly with a friend with only one game cartridge. This is a phenomenal move on Nintendo’s part. Get the game and revisit a classic.

A Musical Instrument for All

Music is one of those mediums where it is easy to tell if you are talented or not. Play before a live audience. The ear tells no lies. You will know before the last note if you have touched audiences’ heart or angered their ears. With the cooperation of Toshio Iwai, Yamaha’s latest gadget bridges the divide between the musical and the unmusical. It is called the Tenori-On. This gadget consists of 16 rows of 16 LEDs on a light board. Side control buttons allow players to change note length, time signature, samples or pitch or select from one of sixteen sound layers. The Tenori-On is “visual music.” Each light on the 16 x 16 grid can play a different note or generate a light effect. It is both a display and input controller. The Tenori-On includes six sound/light and performance modes. It’s also has 16 layers which are the equivalent of recording tracks. The tracks can be combined to create truly complex music.

Tenori-On-yamaha

Montreal electronic composer Pheek describes his first impressions of the Tenori-On. “My first impression was a flashback from my youth. As a kid, I was imagining the year 2000 filled with gadgets and weird instruments like the Tenori-On. The Tenori-On is more of a performance tool which has a tactile interface for fast creative output. That’s more of something you can’t get from a mouse and keyboard.” Pheek liked the device especially for its randomizer feature. The musician hits the notes and the device determines how it is played.

The Tenori-On is a unique instrument. It has a complexity that attracts electronic musicians. Their Tenori-On compositions are making their rounds about the net. Yamaha’s instrument is also simple enough for the non-musician. The LED lights provide musical feedback. Yamaha’s latest instrument can accept SD media cards. This allows you to upload your own samples into the device.

Yamaha’s Tenori-On costs £629.99 in the UK. The North American price has not been determined. It is a revolutionary device that will inspire even the most amateur of musicians and fascinate professionals. As the Tenori-On catches on it will only be a matter of time before samples will be available for internet downloads.

Remote Robot Control

More options are usually better with technology. One of the areas where this is not the case is the remote control. Most new gadgets come with a remote and you can easily find yourself juggling between 5 - 10 of them. Toshiba is developing a gadget that will be able to help. It is a robot called ApriPoco. ApriPoco can sense remote infrared transmissions. Every time you use a remote control near him, he will ask you, “What are you doing?” He learns from your voice response. So if you say “Turning on the TV,” ApriPoco will learn these words slowly. Once he has learned it, you can give him the command. ApriPoco will turn on the TV for you without you needing the remote. Besides sensing infrared transmissions, Toshiba’s developmental robot is able to transmit them as well.

ApriPoco robot

ApriPoco is being developed in Kawasaki at Toshiba’s humancentric R&D lab. Toshiba’s robot is 27 cm tall. He has two wings instead of arms and looks like a fat hairless chicken or duck. Consumers will need to speak slowly to ApriPoco as if they were talking to a baby or small child. During a demonstration, researchers were able to speak commands and the robot obeyed. ApriPoco turned a TV on and off, activated a lamp and an air conditioner. The current version of ApriPoco has most of his speech recognition software is stored in a nearby laptop. As research progresses, later versions of the robot will contain the speech recognition software. Future versions of ApriPoco will be able to decipher TV genres and program names. Using an electronic program guide, the robot will be able to do your channel surfing for you.

Toshiba does have plans for turning ApriPoco into a commercial device. However the robot’s developmental needs are so great that Toshiba does not have a projected release date or pricing information. ApriPoco will sell because it is a unique looking gadget and speech recognition gadgets sell well. If Toshiba made ApriPoco USB compatible so that consumers could download MP3 into it, sells would increase dramatically. Consumers would then be able to say, “Play music,” and ApriPoco would then play the music that it has in his memory.
