Intel Levels the Laptop Playing Field
The “Davids” in the computing industry will get a huge boost when Intel’s Rich Creek 2 notebook motherboard is displayed at next week’s Solution Summit. The Rich Creek 2 motherboard will allow system builders to create business class laptops for less than $800. They will then have the opportunity to compete against the computer industry’s Goliaths. Prior to Rich Creek 2 motherboard, system builders had to content themselves with selling consumer laptops below $500. This resulted most often in a one time sale and the system integrators were unable to add valuable consulting and technical support services to the sale. This is not the case in the business community. The Rich Creek 2 motherboard helps companies like Seneca Data of Syracuse, New York to offer business laptops with a 3-year warranty. Seneca is also one of the groups that will be displaying their new laptop at Intel’s Solution Summit next week.
Steve Maser is the vice president of product development and marketing for Seneca Data. He describes this momentous occasion. “We are at a key defining moment where Intel is putting their muscle behind a (build to order notebook mobile motherboard). I think we should see growth similar to what we experienced with the desktop in the mid-90s and servers in the early 2000.” Custom parts have been a huge problem for smaller companies offering laptops. If the motherboard was found to be damaged, several days passed while the system integrator had to wait to receive the custom motherboard. This hurt smaller system builders greatly. Companies like Dell who manufactured their own parts were able to repair laptops quicker. This often results in repeat business for them. Thanks to Intel’s new laptop motherboard, system builders will be able to not only build customer defined laptops but also to quickly repair them. If a Rich Creek 2 motherboard laptop is damaged, the system builder can simply replace it with another Rich Creek 2 board.
Intel’s creation of the Rich Creek 2 motherboard is a win for all parties concerned. They will get additional revenue from the motherboard sales. System builders like Seneca Data will see increased sales by entering the business laptop market. Consumers will have many more options when they are shopping for entry level business laptops. The only ones that should fear the Rich Creek 2 are the System Building Giants like Dell or Gateway.
