Merging Speed and Performance into One Gadget - ASUS Lamborghini VX2

Merging Speed and Performance into One Gadget - ASUS Lamborghini VX2
The second coming of the ASUS Lamborghini - half a sport car, half a laptop - almost happened, though it still might last a bit.

It’s been almost a year since first pieces of information about the first Lamborghini - the VX1 - reached us. If you look now at it and at the relation between the price and the number of positive feedbacks about this gadgets, you understand that people have realized its true value. Since the VX1 made it on the marker there have been sites posting reviews, comments and simple post about this gadget. This way the Lamborghini series from ASUS became extremely popular.

The popularity of the laptop might be explained not only by the brand name ASUS, but by the name of the series - Lamborghini. I mean there’s hardly a guy who wouldn’t, at least once, dream of driving a Lamborghini - the sportiest of all the sports cars. But ASUS made it possible to hold this wild beast in your hands, having it on your knees and pushing its keys.

So anyway, this popularity gave the creators of VX1 the idea that there should be another model in the Lamborghini series. It’s a series, after all, and a series must have at least two models in its range. So they have come up with the ASUS Lamborghini VX2.

The strategy of giving us information on this gadget was the same as in the case of VX1: it was like waving a nice, juicy bone in front of a dog’s nose. In other words: they gave us almost nothing.

Many of the gadget geeks were really disappointed with the history repeating (and I fully support them in this), but I guess it’s better than absolutely nothing. Now we have at least something to speculate on. I’ll be thinking how it’ll be, how fast, what will be it’s ‘interior’ and so on. You know, because at this point we know almost nothing about it… not more than there will be two external variants of the VX2: a traditional yellow a black, both with the Lamborghini logo, of course.

The only thing known about the interior is the CPU, which will be an Intel Centrino Duo. However, as much as I love Intel, I couldn’t say that it would match half of the Lamborghini powers. But it is absolutely the best candidate for the role of second fastest gadget!

After the launch of Vista all over the world, they stuff it everywhere; even the Lamborghini VX2 will have it onboard (why spoil such a gadget?)

Well, I guess we’ll catch up more on this topic later in this year, and I guess ASUS should organize a full time presentation this April at CeBITT 2007. And be sure to see me there, VX2, my boy!

Another CeBIT - Further Razer Novelties
This year’s CeBIT has been kindly offered some 2 square yards in Hanover, Germany. On this limited space hundreds of leading technology companies have managed to place their stands to display their newest accomplishments in their particular sphere of activity.

Macko 2.1 acoustic system from RazerThe Company Razer, which is known for its innovative ideas in the sphere of different PC peripherals and accessories, has presented the wide public its newest acoustic system. the Macko 2.1 is a 2.1 acoustic system, which, according to the statement of its developers, is the first ever sound system to support the THX Ground Plane technology and the THX Slot Speaker technology.

The two technologies are meant to improve the sound produced by the system. This improvement is being achieved by removing the sound artifacts, which are produced when the sound waves reflect from the table or any other surface. This way the Mako 2.1 sound system produces pure and high-quality 3D sound.

Mako 2.1 is based on the Bi-amplified system. This system features 2 amplifiers in every speaker, thus providing each of the two speakers with a total power of 100 Watt. In addition the set is complemented with a 100 Watt sub-woofer. This way the overall power of the Macko 2.1 is about 300 watt!!! The range of frequencies of this gadget is between 30 and 20,000 Hz. All these features make the Macko 2.1 the best choice for hardcore gamers and music fans: this acoustic system will satisfy their need in every acoustical detail they would ever want to hear.

So you see that the Macko 2.1 is quite a powerful piece, and according to the picture it is also a stylish one. I think it would look nice at my gradma’s fireplace. For listening relaxing music like Bach, Mozart… and shooting all those bad guys down in Counter-strike!

Unfortunately there was still no word the pricing of this sound system, but I guess it’ll be affordable, though not for many. As you know Razer wouldn’t make anything that you couldn’t describe as WOW, or OWESOME, or GREAT. These guys know what there doing.

So enjoy the sound and Cheers!

Yahoo! Answers on why vinyl sounds better than CDs
It doesn’t matter what side of that debate you come down on, because this stuff is fantastic. The same people that hold that vinyl (analog) sounds better than CD (digital) are probably the same people that believe pipe organs are superior to electronic instruments. If Bach was alive today, he wouldn’t be on a pipe organ - he’d be using cutting edge technology. And Beethoven would be saying, “Give me the digital” How much did they want to sell this for, again? Worth every penny. Why does vinyl sound better than CD? [Yahoo! Answers]…

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System developed by Fujifilm (who else) allows the naked eye to view 3D images in well, 3D glory, without the need for any pesky glasses. These 3D images will definitely go a long way in changing the landscape where digital cameras, digital photo frames as well as photo printing services are concerned. Fujifilm hopes to commercialize the system by next year with its new 3D system that relies on a 3D image shooting method known as “double-lens type”, using a couple of lenses to do so. The 3D images are then displayed using a LCD panel endowed with “Light Direction Control System”, a technology that controls the light’s direction. Do you think such 3D images are here to stay, or are they just a temporary and welcome distraction?

Humanscale Switch both ergonomically and ambidextrously correct

Humanscale Switch both ergonomically and ambidextrously correct

No one should ever underestimate the value of ergonomics. More and more people these days are suffering from carpel tunnel or repeated wrist syndrome every day. Surely there is more that users can do than just shake their hands after a long day on the desktop or laptop.

One of the great contributors to the plague of repeated wrist syndrome lies right next to your computer. That’s right, the mouse is one of the great contributors to carpel tunnel, and something has to be done for users unless they want to have some metal bands on their hands.

Humanscale has created an adjustable ergonomic mouse called the Switch. It has an adjustable palm rest and size for ergonomic stability. It also has a navigation dish to prevent carpel tunnel from scrolling. Not only is the Switch good at ergonomics, but it can be used ambidextrously as well. Hence, the name of the Switch.

This is good, since most mice are designed for right handed people, and left handers get left out. I’m not left-handed myself, but I believe that the southpaw community are often left out on certain devices like scissors, notebooks, and most desks.

The Humanscale Switch is not planned to be out soon, but there is no word on the price.

The Pretec i-disk Vogue 1GB USB Drive

I don’t think I can ever really understand the need to make USB drives shiny and then attach them to a chain so you can wear them around your neck.  I realize they are trying to make technology fashionable to wear, I just don’t see it happening for the general public.  Especially when they create a USB drive that has that overly cheap colored gold painted onto it.  It’s just not really a thumb drive that screams class.

Unfortunately the drive also doesn’t have a whole lot of storage packed into it, a whopping 1GB to be exact.  Which isn’t going to be a ton for most people.  Yes, it’ll work when you’re in dire need of a quick save so you can run off and then place that info onto a different computer right away.  However, using it to actually store a bunch of stuff probably isn’t going to happen.  The shiny little drive is actually a bit cheaper than usual.  It used to be priced at $49.99 and is now set at $29.99.

Play-by-play of the T-Mobile G1 announcement

Google_g1_phoneI unfortunately couldn’t make use of my press invite to this morning’s T-Mobile G1 with Google event. Blame it on logistics with kids, school and such… you know, the little things in life. So the best I can do is hit up the event webcast and give a play-by-play for those who can’t see it… and for as long as the stream holds out. ;) So buckle up, pull the straps tight and let’s see if there’s any interesting Android news that hasn’t already been leaked yet! Watch along with me and see if you hear what I hear… and more importantly ponder what it all means for the mobile space! If all goes well, I’ll have updates galore, so refresh, join in the comments and have fun! Note: we now have a live feed from the event over at GigaOM if you can’t get the T-Mobile stream.

11:15 = Very quick wrap up and the audience is being herded downstairs to play with the G1. The event is over; shorter than I would have thought. Light on some details as well, but I suspect the product page is now live or will be shortly. More to follow as I rest my fingers!

11:13 = Asking the audience to do a web search on a phone. Big difference between speed of web on phone vs. speed of web on a notebook. Ought to be an interesting test to pit the iPhone vs. the G1 for search.

11:10 = Larry Page and Sergey Brin arrive! They seem to be late due to the local street closings. Don’t they use Google Maps / Traffic? ;)

11:08 = Does it handle GMail any differently or add any additional value? Nothing new from the sounds of it. However, GTalk online presence in the phone is there. Sweet! Work with iTunes and Skype? Answer was around audio file formats for iTunes… sounds like no. Same with Skype: not at this time.

11:05 = Bluetooth profile question: headset hands-free. A2DP possible in the future. Browser question: same base as Chrome. “Chrome-light” was the explanation. Question on the target audience: who’s it for? Consumers? Business? “Mass appeal”, which makes sense. Google as a brand reaches all audiences.

11:04 = More about the SIM-lock question. The device is subsidized, hence it’s locked to T-Mobile. Nothing new here, folks. (Let the jailbreakers begin!)

11:02: Push e-mail support? Yes! Any desktop app for data and application sync? Nope; it’s all on the device and over the air

11:01 - Question about modem tethering: not for use as a modem. Will require a voice plan. How about Microsoft Office support? Reads Word, PDF, Excel. No native Exchange compatibility. Device is SIM-locked to T-Mobile.

11:00 = European availability: UK, early November. Across Europe in early 2009.

10:58 = Pricing = $179. Existing T-Mo customers can order today. October 22nd is the commercial launch date. Two data plans to choose from: $25 unlimited web/limited messaging. $35 adds unlimited messaging.

10:50 = Zooming on the browser looks more like a a combo between Opera Mobile and Safari. A zoom area appears when you touch the screen then zooms in when you let go. Interesting. Seems like a very short focus on the device and features at this point.

10:57 = Highlighting third-party teams that developed apps to track your carbon footprint and a barcode scanner that offers product pricing and info.

10:52 = Enough with the video demo. Discussion on the open nature of the platform and how it benefits developers. Android Marketplace and third-parties will drive innovation.

10:45 = Device overview starts on video. Screen swipes like we’ve seen before. Tap and hold screen for more options. Kinetic scrolling. One-click Amazon MP3 purchases. Nice ties into the Google systems for more info on songs and such. Auto-rotate of the screen when you flip it out. Maps integration (duh!) with Street View. Compass-mode combines Street View and GPS: turn the phone and Street View turns.

10:37 = Andy Rubin from Google on stage: “developers can use the platform or modify the platform”. Very different from the iPhone in that regard.

10:35 = Deutsche Telecom on stage. “Mobile Internet is the dominant trend in the industry.” Margins from data are growing fast. Connectivity and data are mentioned over and over… voice: not at all. Makes me wonder about VoIP on this device for the future.

10:32 = New platform, device, system and services. This is an eco-system is the message to me, not just a phone.

10:30 = Started right on time! T-Mobile is on stage discussing world-wide connectivity. Fitting that Google is one of the most global brands there is.

10:27 = While we wait for the big news, why not learn four things about T-Mobile’s 3G service?

10:26 = Hey, they’ve got a little country music for entertainment! They knew I’d be here. ;)

10:20 = T-minus ten minutes for T-Mobile and Google Android.

ProTee United launches ProTee Play

ProTee United launches ProTee Play

ProTee United is the #1 indoor golf simulator company in the world, and they have just rolled out their latest product known as the ProTee Play. This highly advanced computer game allows both avid golfers and gamers who love the game to enjoy a few rounds of indoor golf right behind their PC, reveling in the comfort of international golf courses in full 3D glory. I guess getting this allows you to enjoy your game no matter what the weather is like outside, but you will lack the exercise from all the walking around though.

ProTee Play relies on an internet connection or a network setup in order for several players to get their game on, but if you happen not to have any friends (how sad), then you can always play against the computer. Unfortunately, there won’t be any additional peripherals required to increase the realism of the title as all you need to swing the club is a mouse or a joystick. I suppose no matter how realistic the game is within, without the external hardware to help transfer this feeling of realism, all their efforts will amount to naught. After all, the whole idea of using a connected golf club peripheral would be for you to translate those in-game swings into your performance on the green to help you shoot a low score, right?

Before the year is over though, ProTee United will introduce new supplementary packages including an advanced sensor system that enables players to build their own indoor golf simulator at home. Interestingly enough, the company will roll out a version that can be played over a Wii console next year, so that ought to up the realism ante. I suppose playing a round of golf virtually isn’t the same as being on the course yourself, but hey - think of all the carbon footprint and money you’ll save by not flying around the globe with a bunch of friends, and if you’re losing you can always pull the plug on your computer and cite a blackout just to preserve your score, right?

High Tech Napkins

High Tech Napkins

Who said a napkin can’t be more than a ‘throw-me-away’ piece of paper?! Know that its mission as a dirt/stains/drops remover has come to an end!

Last year we have witnessed several napkin designs, but none of them have so radically changed the concept of it as High Tech Napkin. Let me introduce it! The High Tech Napkin is designed by Avery Hollemanuses and uses e-ink and RF technology, which basically makes it a smart Napkin PC. It is designed for group collaborations, so corporate and fast-response enterprises can use it fully.

How it works?
The kit includes at least 2 pens and several Napkins. Each pen processes and displays information on the napkin which is much like e-ink paper. Then the pen transmits your hieroglyphics to the base station which indeed makes up a PC. So it is about two indispensable processes: 1) processed data is sent to the pen (long range RF); 2) and relaying of the image to the Napkin interface (short range RF).

The Napkin interface represents a multi-touch input e-paper surface. The base station is characterized by an OLED display that gives status information only. E-paper requires so little energy that it can be inductively powered. The pen wirelessly powers the Napkin interface when it comes within range. E-paper can retain its bright, full color image even without power. E-paper display has the property to retain image excluding the need to print.

How to use?
Whenever you get a fresh idea you can put it on a Napkin! It is better to use a fresh Napkin for each new idea. At a brainstorming meeting you may pass the ideas around, add to each other’s idea, thus work efficiently together. You can also connect Napkins to make a larger interface. Portable unit holds 2 pens and several rolled Napkins.

It is enough to sign your name to load your personal settings, preferences, bookmarks, etc. Pens can log who creates an idea so that credit can be given later. Pens come with various colors to prevent confusion.

Advantages:

  • The Napkin PC replaces printers
  • It wastes no paper
  • The only part you’ll need to replace (after several years of intensive use) is the Napkin interface
  • It has no battery. It is provided with a thin single layer flexible circuit board with an inductive power circuit
  • Easy to recycle. Only the plastic and circuit layers are recycled being peeled apart and melted down separately. There are no hazardous elements to deal with

Dimensions:
1. Napkin interface: 180×180 mm (2 mm thick);
2. Pen Stylus: 140 mm

RCA responds to Kodak Pocket HD

RCA responds to Kodak Pocket HD

When Kodak announced the Zi6 pocket HD Camcorder, it made serious waves. Now, RCA is responding by releasing their own HD version based on their Small Wonder line of pocket camcorders. The EZ300HD will sell for $160 and will shoot 720p HD video and shoot digital still pictures. It has a 2.4” LCD screen, simple thumb buttons that are easy to control (can’t beat a giant red recording button), and 2 GB of internal memory, which is upgradable to the current standard of 16GB, with it’s High Capacity SD card slot. This will translate to up to 10 hours of high definition video.

Another interesting feature is that according to RCA, the EZ300HD has been designed with low light situations in mind. Because of the relative infancy of the HD spectrum, most HD cameras have issues in low light, so the fact that RCA is taking steps to address low light video it a noteworthy one. Powered by lithium ion batteries, the EZ300HD promises longer battery life over the traditional AAs that usually power the pocket camera standard. And with a swing out lens assembly which allows for self video taping, the RCA300HD promises some very fun use at parties. But don’t expect to do extreme closeup photography, as the EZ300HD has no macro capability.

Samsung presents it’s FESTIVAL Plasma TV

Samsung presents it’s FESTIVAL Plasma TV
Samsung, with another “world’s first”!

The new “Cannes” Plasma TV is an absolutely new, or maybe not so absolutely, TV set from Samsung - probably the world’s leader in electronics and in being the world’s first manufacturer to always make world’s first gadgets.

What does it have what other TVs from Samsung don’t? Well, first of all, and I guess the most important, is the girl standing next to it. She’s very pretty and is a very important part of the TV set itself, because if she’s gone, no one would ever need the “Cannes” Plasma TV from Samsung. Just kidding! But I really like the girl though, I guess I’ll write her a letter if I find her address by some miracle.

Samsung's So let’s see what the manufacturer himself - Samsung Electronics Ltd. - says about this nifty gadget. I mean the TV, not the chick! They say that among the technologies worth to mention the most worth-to-mention are the Ultra Daylight, Real Motion Studio and the Natural True Color technology. How they improve the quality and the sales of this TV, I could only guess, but it sounds cool and it is always a MUST when announcing a novelty: you should always think of some cool words to name the new technologies. But some of the upper mentioned are described further on.

Other sources say that the TV has an ability to change the contrast of the image displaying, in accord with the time of the day (or lighting). For example in an absolutely dark room the display would adapt itself to a contrast ratio of 15.000:1, whereas a bright room would sink this ratio to 1.000:1.

This fluctuation of the contrast ratio is achieved thanks to the technology already mentioned in that worth-mentioning category. I’m speaking about the Ultra Daylight technology.

The other innovation in this gadget - the Real Motion Studio technology - has taken care of a crystal clear image. Due to this technology the image is being cleared of the blurred outlines and an unclear text.

If already interested, I’m glad! Because I am too. As for the place to buy the gadget - can’t tell you anything. However the price is something I’m able to share.

As far as I know, the “Cannes” Plasma TV was issued in a series of models. I won’t use my blog’s space to tell you all the prices, but some of them are: about $ 2.125 for the 42-inches version of the TV; almost $ 3.500 for the 50-inches wide “Cannes” Plasma TV in your room; and about $ 9.400 - for the model with an absolutely clear image, I mean the High-Def “Cannes”.

If you find this beauty somewhere around, please let me know. I’m dying to connect to it my good old PS2 (and maybe even try it out with the PS3 sometimes, when it gets cheaper than a space shuttle).

P.S.: And guys, don’t focus on the picture, because it’s hypnotizing. It’s got everything a man needs: a wide-screen TV; a hot girl next to it (and she’s not yelling at you) and a snack bar on the background. This is disturbing!

ASUS AIGuru SV1 First Mobile Skype Phone

ASUS just can’t seem to stop its success lately. Not only do they have those hot netbooks, but they have just added to their success with the world’s first Skype Certified videophone called the AiGuru SV1.

The AiGuru SV1 allows the user to make unlimited phone calls with a webcam, speaker, and microphone, and to see the person he or she is calling with the seven inch screen.

Of course, Skype is a funny thing. There are those who cannot do without it, and there are those who have never tried it. If you are in the former category, then you probably work in some business that requires a lot of video conferencing with clients. If you are in the latter category, then you should also find the SV1 easy to use with an “icon-based interface and intuitive button layout”.

As for the Net connection, the AiGuru allows for an 802.11 b/g wireless or to Ethernet via router. As for the power, it has a rechargeable battery that can operate for about 20 minutes. That might be long enough for a full video conversation, but that might be enough to move the SV1 if need be.

The ASUS AiGuru SV1 should be a available this October for about $299.

Cooktop concept could help College crowd

Cooktop concept could help College crowd

Designer Matthias Pinkert has created a very interesting electrical stove concept which promises to help college students and those just starting out on their own in studio apartments. Called the Electrolux Cook Top Vesta concept, the idea is a kind of Murphy Bed for stovetops. The cooking surface, containing 4 stylish electrical burners, can be flipped up for food prep and provide increased valuable kitchen space in cramped spaces. Heck, you don’t even need a kitchen. Any table area can be turned into a stove top with this idea.

Another interesting feature is the RFID reader which will glean information on food packaging to manage the heat and not overcook or undercook the food. That’s fine if the cook is just warming up prepackaged dinners, but if someone is seeking to indulge in the Food Network fantasy and make their own gourmet meals, that could be more problematic than helpful.

Still, the idea is one that is really needed in the single college world, where students can change their addresses every semester and don’t want to pay for a university meal plan. If they could only have a similar convection oven design, a complete portable kitchen might actually mean students would learn to cook and not just “nuke” their food.

Iphone3gusbpoweradapterMy list for not upgrading from a first-gen iPhone to the iPhone 3G gets a little longer today. Actually, that’s not fair to say because the issue is getting addressed, so I’d just have to remove it from my list. Seems there’s a wee bit of a problem with those ultracompact USB adapters for the iPhone 3G: the metal prongs apparently like to stay in outlets, even if the rest of the unit doesn’t. That would make them ultra-ultracompact in my book, but it also renders them useless and the outlet unsafe.

Folks that have iPhone 3G devices in the U.S. Japan, Canada, Mexico, and some Latin American countries want to swing by their nearest Apple store after October 10th for a free placement. Option two is to hit up the Apple support site and fill out a form to have a replacement shipped direct.

Kevin is hard at work at Mobilize 08 carrying his MSI Wind around and typing like crazy. I had to snap a picture of the Wind which I am really impressed with having played with Kevin’s.
