From Atari Joyboard to Wii Fit: 25 years of “exergaming”
boing_boing:http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/05/15/from-atari-joyboard.html After hugely successful launches in Japan and Europe, Nintendo’s Wii Fit exercise game is coming to the United States May on 19th, where it is sure to find sales success. But Wii Fit is hardly the first example of an attempt to meld videogaming and exercise — it’s not even the first fitness offering from Nintendo. Atari Joyboard (1982) In 1982, Atari released the “Joyboard,” a simple four-switch balance board controller for the Atari 2600 that stuffed the guts of a standard joystick into a ridged, black plastic slab. A single game was released for the Joyboard. Dubbed Mogul Maniac, the game emulated the experience of slalom skiing with all the subtlety a four-position digital sensor could provide. The Joyboard is generally considered a failure, too finicky for nuanced control. In fact, one of the most interesting uses for the Joyboard involved not triggering its switches: some claim, perhaps apocryphally, that engineers building the Commodore Amiga used to manage development stress by sitting perfectly motionless on the Joyboard in zazen, leading to the “Guru Meditation” verbiage in the Amiga’s crash warning dialog. Game developer Ian Bogost developed a game of the same name that uses the Joyboard as an interface, in which fully motionless sitting causes an on-screen guru avatar to slowly decamp from his mat into the air with yogic flight. [Image: AtariAge.com] Had the Joyboard seen retail triumph, it’s conceivable Atari might have developed a proper exercise game, complete with weight statistics and performance tracking….

Protect your mobile data with a touchscreen enclosure

Protect your mobile data with a touchscreen enclosure

DataLocker

I know that my data needs to be secured, which is why I have a variety of security measures in place. Of course I rarely have top-secret information that I take with me on the road, but if I did, I would make sure that I had an external drive which was well protected. This DataLocker would be one good way of doing just that.

Rather than taking the route of dealing with security measures from Windows (or whatever OS you’re using), it is simply locked down by a 6-digit code which you input on the small touchscreen. Without the proper code, you can be sure that your data is perfectly safe and locked away.

The DataLocker is a bit steep at $100 for the enclosure (you’ll need to supply your own 2.5” SATA drive), but at least you’ll know that everything is safe and sound. Of course I’d think that for $100 they could at least make it look a little nicer.

Texas Instruments introduces Wide UXGA chip

Texas Instruments introduces Wide UXGA chip

f30.jpgTexas Instruments DLP is once again at the forefront of projector technology, having introduced the first WUXGA DLP chip in the world. This new chip can be found in its new WUXGA data projector known as the F30. The inclusion of this chip means the F30 is able to produce the highest resolution images at a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels in a 16:10 aspect ratio, finding no equal in the market today. Perfect for people who are used to widescreen computer resolutions and want to reproduce it on the big screen for all and sundry to see.

According to Anders Lokke, International Marketing & Communications Manager at projectiondesign, “While 1080p has been widely regarded as the top shelf standard for resolution quality and use for video-centric applications like HDTVs, we recognized that select businesses could stand to benefit more with pixel qualities that surpassed even that of 1080. WUXGA is incorporated inside our F10 WUXGA and F30 WUXGA projectors. This was something that our high-end visualization and simulation customers were asking for and we are proud to be the first to introduce and to deliver it to the market.”

WUXGA is currently one of the more popular resolutions where high end desktop monitors and notebooks are concerned, so having a projector which is able to match the monitor resolution is the ideal route to take, and Texas Instruments aims to be the pioneer in this path. Initial impressions have shown that the F30 WUXGA projector is an eye catcher when it was first unveiled in January this year, with folks in the industry lavishing praises on it. The F30 is perfect for both computer based applications and corporate use. Whenever you want to make software demonstrations, visualization and any application involving display of fine detail or analysis of large amounts of data, the F30 WUXGA projector ought to fit the bill perfectly considering its resolution that won’t screw around with your eyes. Thanks to Texas Instruments, the ball is rolling, so here’s to seeing other manufacturers come up with something similar.

New Get a Mac ad
There’s a new Get a Mac ad. Just assume that this post has gone through the necessary preliminaries to posting a new Get a Mac ad: a lede inoculating the post against criticism by admitting that it’s not funny, followed by a finger-steeply remark about how Apple’s homing in on Vista, and finally some self-conscious mumbling about Hodgman. I like the puppy….

Don’t Panic: DIY portable Wikipedia as Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Hack
Instructables has posted a great little how-to on creating your own Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… This Instructable will set out how to construct what I believe to be a unique implementation of Wikipedia in an offline, portable device. It involves installing a stripped-down distribution of Linux on a Psion 5mx handheld, and installing a static HTML version of Wikipedia for use with one of two browsers. Most importantly, you do not have to be a Linux wizard to achieve this. I will assume a basic familiarity with computers, but you do not need experience with the intricacies of filing systems, compiling source code and the stuff that traditionally puts people off using Linux. I’d prefer the Encyclopedia Galactica myself, but hey… Wikipedia in your pocket, aka Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy v1.0 [Instructables]…

Sternreiter alarm clocks will wake (or make) the dead

Sternreiter alarm clocks will wake (or make) the dead
Many alarm clocks have come out in the past few years, trying to get you from hitting the snooze button by requiring you to perform some act of groggy, post-oneiric dexterity (like hitting a target with a laser beam) or a teeth-grating act of pseudo-robotic annoyance (like an alarm clock that rolls off the table and goes rushing around the room, squealing). Still, why accomplish with circuitry what you can accomplish with ear drum bursting sound? The $49.95 Sternreiter Twin-Bell alarm clock ring at a volume of over 86db. There is no snooze. You either wake up, turn it off, then vomit out your heart, or your friends find you a week later, lying in a pillow puddle of your own gelatinized brains. Video: Bizarre light bulb commercial from Thailand has just enough monsters
This commercial from Thailand, featuring a variety of what I presume are traditional monsters in Thai culture, is really fantastic. I can never get enough television featuring motile, glowing internal organs floating free of body but still attached to a malevolent head. Or transvestites, which are also features. And it actually makes me want to buy Sylvania lightbulbs, not because the commercial has a bit to do with the product, but just because I’d like to support a company that sanctions something this wacky. Fashion Watch by Zviad Tsikolia

Fashion Watch by Zviad Tsikolia

An everlasting question penetrates my mind: Why people continue to design watches, when there are a lot of devices to feature this function?! Then the answer came: It is about classics, tradition, and lifestyle.

Watches have come a long way throughout the history and they have gained a specific signification – some kind of hidden meaning. Zviad Tsikolia, a well known watch designer has probably thought about this when conceived the idea of this Concept Fashion Watch.

The way it functions is totally amazing! Fashion Watch is actually made of modern materials, featuring an electronic date and time indicators. A couple of characteristic circles perform the role of hands. The electronic date indicator can be displayed virtually anywhere on the face of the watch.

Being made from modern materials, the watch still works using already known technologies.

It is interesting that the winding mechanism is mounted on the upper zone of the Fashion Watch. It is very convenient because it doesn’t leave any trace on your wrist as watches usually do.

I always wondered how far watch designers can go to create the watch of the future. Now I know for sure that there are no limits for new ideas even when it is about such a field as wrist watch design.

Many of my friends are convinced that Fashion Watch having a trendy look, is still rather uncomfortable to use. Well, I guess it is just a matter of time! Besides the key feature of this watch is rather its design then the functionality. It is a watch for people who are used to break the habits and have an expressed lifestyle!

This Fashion Watch looks like a tiny one, that’s why I wonder whether men would prefer it to a balkier one (ex. Rolex). Undoubtedly, the unique style of this watch will keep its owner at the center of attention! Though, I wouldn’t give one to my girlfriend and certainly wouldn’t take one for myself.

Sandio 3D Gaming Mouse gets productivity driver upgrade

Sandio 3D Gaming Mouse gets productivity driver upgrade
Sandio’s crazy 3D mouse, which augments the standard layout with three analog thumb-joysticks, has new drivers which add support for modeling applications. AutoCAD, Maya and 3DStudio Max now map Cartesian mojo to the mouse’s profusion of hats. “Users of CAD and rendering software; such as AutoDesk’s 3D Studio Max, and Maya can now move along and rotate around X, Y and Z axes in Screen and Camera modes without switching between 3D objects and operation menus. For PC gamers, the Sandio 3D Game O2 is the only mouse of its kind designed for RTS and RPG games. It improves 3D game navigation, makes it possible to effortlessly and intuitively manipulate camera views, and even provides a competitive edge with 16 programmable keys.” I requested a review unit ages ago, but ever since it arrived it’s just sat there on the shelf, looking far too intimidating to actually break out the blisterpack and make a fool of myself with. Transforming Optimus Prime iPod dock! Squee!
For an 80’s kid like me, Takara Tomy’s transforming Optimus Prime iPod dock can’t be described by words, only by phonemic abstractions meant to convey the most transcendental surges of consumerist joy. Words like SQUEE! and WOOBLEWOOP! But being an 80’s kid, I’ll simply fall back on a term burned into my language banks by a thousand hours of animated half-hour toy commercials. To borrow an expression from the common argot of our youths, this is just totally awesome. $145 bucks, which is crazy, but fuck it, I’m getting one. Transformers iPod Dock [Jlist via DVICE]…

MacTab

MacTab
You can always tell when a man has been involved in the design of a product! This is first of all by the austere and no-frills shapes. MacTab keyboard is one of these products being designed by Yann Le Coroller. This ultra portable tab is meant to be a stylish complement to MacBook.

I guess, the designer knows pretty well that men can’t live without at least two things – cars and PCs/laptops (the third would be women :)! In my case the priorities are just like that. The perfect story would be — a trip by car (my favorite Porche), with my MacBook (and its MacTab accessory) on the back sit and my girlfriend to my right hand (a short skirt would be just in place).

However, knowing the facts that: 1) women favor what is the best in this world; 2) women are more organized than men; and 3) women tend to work even on holidays and vacations, then I bet a lady would get a MacTab too. And almost any would certainly do that if MacTab fits the interior of her office or bedroom!

What I like the most about MacTab is that it is incredibly thin and is a perfect wireless keyboard. Apple’s MacTab looks like a tablet on your desk. It has a protection cover for transportation and is provided with magnets and notched parts to stay in place. I was surprised to know that it can be used both horizontally and vertically. It turns out that there is a hinge to enable vertical position on the back of the computer.

What my girlfriend likes about MacTab is that it has a sleek design and soft and sensitive surface. Besides, it is not sliding on the desk. The most important thing about this is (attention!!!) that the problem of pulled out keyboard’s wire (by her long and restless legs) is solved!

I’m more than sure that Apple’s designer Yann Le Coroller wanted more than a functional and portable keyboard, he wanted to create another shot of beauty to pleasantly surprise loyal consumers. Well, I must be honest – he did surprised me greatly!

Hackenbroich Architekten’s Sitscape Seating System

This one seams to be a “Star Wreck” sofa! (Forgive me my imagination). This is so called Sitscape is a system for a lounge-landscape. It features 1 metre wide and has an infinite length.

The construction is quite simple using the principle of vertical sections connected by metal elements. This makes it possible to basically engineer the configuration of shapes within this system.

Funny or not but the Sitscape will be sold by “metre”! Thus the costumers will have the choice of various compositions which will be proposed by designer or can be constructed by the customer himself.

The soft furnishings are also made of multiple cushions connected to cover the solicited zones of the Sitscape. This make it possible to form an original upholstery too.

The Sitscape prototype you see on photos is 6 metres long. It was created on specific order and is based on six basic positions. As you can see the composition can have smooth forms along with more hard-edged shapes.

The construction of the Sitscape gives the possibility to adjust certain areas in order to obtain positions of maximum relaxation and comfort. These are called <i>transitional areas, which might offer new and unexpected possibilities. You are free to experiment!

Let’s talk about materials. Sections – the main structural elements, are digitally cut out of laminated wood or composite material. The connecting metal elements are made of aluminium. They form spacers between the sections and steel thread rods that go through the sections. The rods are secured by wingnuts giving perfect structural stability. The most visible elements take the main vertical loads while the hidden metal elements give the support for the horizontal and torsion forces.

Well, the construction of Hackenbroich Architekten’s Sitscape is as much simple as complex. “True German quality” – as many would have said.

As for me the construction as well as design reminds me of blinds! And frankly saying, though it looks very interesting and innovative, it also seams to me not too comforting.

Oris BC4 Flight Timer Keeps Jet-Setters Up To Snuff

Oris BC4 Flight Timer Keeps Jet-Setters Up To Snuff

orisbc4.jpg

I don’t care whether you’re a pilot or a frequent flier, there are still ways for the good old time zones to wipe your body clock clean of any past rhythms. Taking a trip from The U.S. to the U.K. is only fun once you’ve got your sleeping patterns back under control. At least enough so you can get a taste of both the night life, and the day light festivities.

The BC4 Flight Timer from Oris is a awesome way to keep tabs on up to three time zones at once right from your wrist. The BC4 features an automatic movement with the second timezone subdial, while the extra-large crown can adjust the third dial for yet another time zone.

One of the best things about the BC4 is its ability to both look awesome and be productive simultaneously. The leather wrist band and expertly designed face make the watch appear to be a unique, high-end time piece, rather than a tool for the jet-setting aviator. Looking good and feeling good are easy with the form and function of the Flight Timer.

But awesome style and expert features doesn’t come cheap. The Oris BC4 Flight Timer will set you back $3,300, so we’re thinking the best candidate for such a watch is a frequent flying CEO or business man. Someone who’s comfortable enough financially to fly first class on a regular basis, but who also needs to mind his sleeping patterns for those early morning meetings.

Fingerprint Authentication Mouse Locks Files With Biometrics

sequiam-biometrics-scanq-fingerprint.jpg

Truth be told, I have an assortment of files on my computer I’d rather not have other people looking at. Whether it be secretive outlines for future blog posts or confidential paper work and conversations, there are just some pieces of data I’d rather not have viewed by any nosy desktop hunters.

While there are plenty of ways to hide the files behind a wall of security features, such as marking files as hidden or developing a password system, the only method some people feel secure with is the use of biometrics. The Sequiam Biometrics ScanQ Fingerprint Authentication Scanner and Software is made especially for securing your personal files which need a little extra privacy.

The scanner, which is compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista, comes stocked with a collection of biometric security features, such as securty authentication for opening and using specific files, logging into Windows, and an assortment of other security measures. The fingerprint scanner is built right into a mouse for easy space integration.

Aside from biometric security, the USB-powered ScanQ offers two security options. One using only your fingerprint, and an option for the ultra secure files which enables both a fingerprint scan and a password in order to access the file.

For $70, the Sequiam Biometrics ScanQ Fingerprint Authentication Scanner is a pretty nice value for the added security and peace of mind it offers if you have files which need to be held under lock and key.

Smart Shoe Experience

Smart Shoe Experience

verb-for-shoe.jpgVectraSense Technologies, Inc. has rolled out “The Smart Shoe Experience” recently, boasting its revolutionary computerized footwear for the masses. Smart Shoe Experience, eh? Well, this won’t be solving any of your mathematical problems anytime soon, but we do know that The Experience includes a collection of internet attractions featuring cutting-edge smart shoe technology within broader fashion and style contexts. Ronald Demon (what a family name), as a pioneer in the field of computerized footwear and creator of Verb For Shoe, said, “We are not just selling some high tech gadget, but are providing an entire experience which includes technology.”

Signature styling is but one of the attractions of the Smart Shoe Experience, and what would definitely make geeks drool would be the following features :-

  • Auto Comfort: The shoes automatically adjust comfort according to the wearer’s movements.
  • Wireless Link: A wireless link allows the shoes to link with your PC.
  • Contact Sharing: The shoes wirelessly communicate with each other, exchanging contact information among different wearers.

Part of The Experience consists of :-

  • New Romantic: A collection of interactive music videos featuring the shoes in various cultural settings.
  • Tech Square: Describes the raw technology.
  • The Chronicles: A frequently updated blog chronicling the Verb For Shoe phenomena.
  • Ron’s Studio: Gets personal with Ronald Demon, creator of Verb For Shoe.
  • The Nation: An online forum where Verb For Shoe enthusiasts world-wide can share experiences and learn about upcoming events.

According to Demon where the product’s appeal lies, “The Experience is unique in that for the first time, it appeals to both the mainstream fashion audience as well as techies. It combines signature styling, craftsmanship, innovation, lushness, and exclusivity in a compelling package.” The shoe has already seen action on both MTV’s Real World and MTV2, and will be on the History Channel in the fall. This won’t be a cheap piece of footwear though, as it retails for a jaw dropping $700. Now that’s definitely expensive by any standards for a pair of shoes which aren’t half as cool as Iron Man’s boots.

Magnetic Massage Cushion. Healthy Comfort

Have you ever wondered why Chinese live more than other nations? Let me tell you! All that things we usually call “Chinese boloney” such as acupuncture, point and vibra massages, herb teas, special diets, etc. — are actually working!

You probably won’t have the chance to try them all, but let me tell you about one Chinese related device – Magnetic Massage Cushion – that makes me feel just wonderful. Why Chinese related? Well, because this cushion uses vibra-massage and heat treatment in keeping with the best Chinese medicine traditions.

Imagine: Alaska, winter, you (a truck driver), and 10 hours of ongoing driving! Unless you are superman you’ll get your butt frost-bite and gummy. Solution? Get a comfortable, heating and massaging sit. I solved the problem using an all-in-one invention - Magnetic Massage Cushion. Not a big deal but solves a lot of problems making it possible to just efficiently relax when you need it the most.

This device is designed to lay on the neck, shoulders, waist and legs and provides heating on buttocks. This acts just like thermotherapy and is able to work together with the massage function. Besides, its vibration massage equals to Chinese point massage. As a result this improves blood circulation and recovers the elasticity of spine, muscles and ligaments.

What you don’t feel but is also included is the magnetic massage which provides curing effects on your lumbar muscles (most exposed ones when it is about long sitting). This helps a lot when you need to get rid of discomfort in your back or various backaches.

Which is quite great about this invention is its ability to perfectly fit home, office or car environment.

Some features a user might be satisfied of are:

  • 8 vibration massage modes
  • 30 minutes automatic functioning
  • adjustable intensity, frequency, speed
  • built-in microcomputer with LCD

You’ll probably not reach the euphoria when using such a cushion, but I’m more than sure that it will make you feel better. This is one of the things I started to love Chinese for!

Laptop To Desktop - Transformers!

Laptop To Desktop - Transformers!
Not long ago people were inspired by laptops! The only problem with laptops was that they climbed down if compared to desktops. Today everything is different – laptops have caught up with desktops, when it is about specs, and exceeded them in terms of comfort and portability.

The comfort and the need to use a PC (mainly Internet) wherever you need it comes as a major priority and PC portability is a most wanted feature. On the other hand, there are people such as Yong-Seong Kim – the designer who considers that we have come to a point when we need it vice-versa: to transform a laptop in a desktop. (Watch out it’s from the “Transformers”!) The designer actually offers a really ingenious docking solution. Yong-Seong Kim’s solution is just a response to the existing demands on the gadgets market!

The very idea consists of a huge slot behind the LCD display, that allows you to slide your laptop in without too much effort. This makes it possible for you to use all data you have on your laptop accessing it as you’d do from a regular desktop. The very display of the laptop can also be used as a secondary screen, this time vertically.

I must be honest the concept sounds and looks pretty good, but it is rather more eye candy than practical.

The question I ask myself is – how am I going to use it? The answer is ‘just the same as I’d have done with my regular laptop’. So, why do I need it then?

Throwing away my cynic moods, I can admit the fact that this creation is meant for those who want it work FANCY, but it is less attractive to those who want it JUST work!

By the way, some tend to somehow compare the concept of the “laptop-transformers” with the Palm Folio. Well, for me it’s not really like that. See for yourself whether it suits you or not!

Samsung presents it’s FESTIVAL Plasma TV

Samsung presents it’s FESTIVAL Plasma TV
Samsung, with another “world’s first”!

The new “Cannes” Plasma TV is an absolutely new, or maybe not so absolutely, TV set from Samsung - probably the world’s leader in electronics and in being the world’s first manufacturer to always make world’s first gadgets.

What does it have what other TVs from Samsung don’t? Well, first of all, and I guess the most important, is the girl standing next to it. She’s very pretty and is a very important part of the TV set itself, because if she’s gone, no one would ever need the “Cannes” Plasma TV from Samsung. Just kidding! But I really like the girl though, I guess I’ll write her a letter if I find her address by some miracle.

Samsung's So let’s see what the manufacturer himself - Samsung Electronics Ltd. - says about this nifty gadget. I mean the TV, not the chick! They say that among the technologies worth to mention the most worth-to-mention are the Ultra Daylight, Real Motion Studio and the Natural True Color technology. How they improve the quality and the sales of this TV, I could only guess, but it sounds cool and it is always a MUST when announcing a novelty: you should always think of some cool words to name the new technologies. But some of the upper mentioned are described further on.

Other sources say that the TV has an ability to change the contrast of the image displaying, in accord with the time of the day (or lighting). For example in an absolutely dark room the display would adapt itself to a contrast ratio of 15.000:1, whereas a bright room would sink this ratio to 1.000:1.

This fluctuation of the contrast ratio is achieved thanks to the technology already mentioned in that worth-mentioning category. I’m speaking about the Ultra Daylight technology.

The other innovation in this gadget - the Real Motion Studio technology - has taken care of a crystal clear image. Due to this technology the image is being cleared of the blurred outlines and an unclear text.

If already interested, I’m glad! Because I am too. As for the place to buy the gadget - can’t tell you anything. However the price is something I’m able to share.

As far as I know, the “Cannes” Plasma TV was issued in a series of models. I won’t use my blog’s space to tell you all the prices, but some of them are: about $ 2.125 for the 42-inches version of the TV; almost $ 3.500 for the 50-inches wide “Cannes” Plasma TV in your room; and about $ 9.400 - for the model with an absolutely clear image, I mean the High-Def “Cannes”.

If you find this beauty somewhere around, please let me know. I’m dying to connect to it my good old PS2 (and maybe even try it out with the PS3 sometimes, when it gets cheaper than a space shuttle).

P.S.: And guys, don’t focus on the picture, because it’s hypnotizing. It’s got everything a man needs: a wide-screen TV; a hot girl next to it (and she’s not yelling at you) and a snack bar on the background. This is disturbing!

Hex-based TBS SHMUP has the awesomest pre-order bonus

Hex-based TBS SHMUP has the awesomest pre-order bonus
The latest entry in the classic R-Type series of SHMUPs, R-Type Command for the PSP, has caught my attention by being some sort of crazy turn-based-strategy SHMUP hybrid, in which you dodge your ships past the bullet curtains of plasma-spraying alien bosses through a hex-grid. But even if that hadn’t, this fantastic scale model R-Type ship that is coming as a pre-order bonus from Amazon would push the game to the top of my ‘anticipated’ list. How awesome is that? I’m pre-ordering, attaching a loop of fishing line and turning it into a Christmas tree ornament. The awesomest one. R-Type Command pre-order bonus is awesome [PSP Fanboy]…

Hard drive crushers… er…. crush drives hard
For those who prefer to play it counter-espionage safe when it comes to their data, EDR Solution’s Hard Disk Crusher will do what it says on the tin: crush hard discs into MacBook-Air-thin wafers of collapsed, unreadable data. The site claims it can crush up to 6 hard disks a minute, and is even as green-friendly as a device of incredible destructive power can be: although it runs off a standard 110v outlet, you can also use a hand-pump, which will crush your drive in 15 pumps. The price for all this paranoia? A staggering 12 grand. And chances are, if you’re willing to pay that to protect your privacy, you’re not going to be happy until you atomize your old data for ultimate unrecoverability.
